African Connection

ChronoTrace is an Africa-focused digital forensics project developed to strengthen the capacity of investigators, cybersecurity professionals, law-enforcement personnel, researchers, and digital evidence practitioners across the continent. The project responds to a practical challenge: many digital forensic tools are expensive, highly specialized, or not easily accessible to investigators and institutions operating with limited resources. ChronoTrace provides an accessible tool for examining browser-based digital evidence, including browsing history, search terms, downloads, bookmarks, timestamps, and other activity relevant to an investigation. It also helps organize this evidence into timelines and structured forensic reports, supporting more consistent documentation and analysis. The project particularly aligns with African needs by: Improving access to digital forensic capabilities without requiring expensive commercial forensic platforms. Supporting African investigators and institutions dealing with cybercrime, online fraud, financial crime, digital abuse, and other technology-enabled investigations. Building local technical capacity by providing a tool that can be studied, adapted, validated, and improved by African developers and forensic practitioners. Strengthening digital evidence handling and reporting, helping investigators turn technical browser artifacts into understandable investigative findings. Encouraging African-led innovation in DFIR, rather than relying entirely on solutions designed outside the continent. ChronoTrace is therefore not simply software developed for a global technical problem; it is part of a broader effort to make practical digital forensic technology more accessible within Africa and to strengthen locally developed capabilities for investigating an increasingly digital society.
